CAPTAIN F. W. BAILEY, USN
Commissioned in 1958 after attending OCS. After attending Deep Sea Dive
School,assigned to USS Current ARS-22 as Salvage Officer,Operation Officer
and XO. In Nov.1963, he reported to Fleet Training Group in San Diego as
Officer in Charge of Training and Transfer Team engaged in training foreign
crews and transferring ships under the Military Assistance Program. Assumed
command of USS Jerome County LST-848 in July 1966 for two years,ship award-
ed Presidential Unit Citation and Meritorious Unit Commendation during this time.
Student at U.S. Naval War College at Newport R.I. beginning in Aug. 1968,upon
graduation,served on Staff at War College until July,1971. Assumed command of
USS Bridget DD-1024 in Sept. 1971. He assumed command of USS O`Callahan
FF-1051 in Jan. 1974 until Oct. 1975. Reported to staff of Commander Third Fleet as
Flag Secretary and Aide to the Commander until July 1978. Assumed command at
this time of USS Preble DDG-46 until Nov. 1980. Assumed command of USS Samuel
Gompers AD-37 in Nov.1980 until 1983. He assumed command of USS Leahy 23 July
1983 until 24 July 1985. On 6 August 1986, after a brief change of command ceremony,
Captain Fred W. Bailey relieved Captain Joseph L. Lockett as Commanding Officer
USS Sterett DLG/CG-31. On 27 September 1986, Captain Richard P. Genet relieved
Captain Fred W. BAILEY as Commanding Officer following a colorful change of
command ceremony alongside Bravo Pier. Capt. Bailey retired as Captain July 1987.
Captain Bailey is married to the former Melissa Dilbeck of Butte, Montana.
