SAMPLE LETTER To Your Senator: The Honorable (full name) (Room #) (Name) Senate Office Building United States Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator: OR............ To Your Representative: The Honorable (full name) (Room #) (Name) House Office Building United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative: ----------------------------------------- 01 February 2008 The purpose of this letter is to ask for your support in contacting the Secretary Of The Navy, The Honorable Donald C. Winter, in order to forward the recommendation for the naming of a ship currently under construction for the U.S. Navy at The Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. This ship is forecasted to be delivered to the U.S. Navy in the year 2010. Many of my former USS Leahy shipmates are very motivated to have this ship, currently un-named, with Hull Number 506 and ship designator of DDG-112, named the USS LEAHY, after Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy. The former USS Leahy (CG/DLG-16) was launched at Bath, Maine in 1961 and she was commissioned on August 4, 1962 in honor of a great naval officer and outstanding American, Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy. The former USS Leahy was de-commissioned in 1993 after 31 years of outstanding service to our country. Admiral Leahy was one of our most famous Naval officers. In the 186 years of our nation's history, only a few individuals have been privileged to actively serve their country in war and in peace with constant excellence for the extensive period of 66 years. The public service of William Leahy began in 1893 with his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy as a Naval Cadet; it ended with his death in 1959 when, as Fleet Admiral, he was serving as advisor to the Secretary of the Navy. In between, lay an amazing career of many facets, Ambassador to France, Governor of Puerto Rico, Chief of Staff to presidents, all glistening with the brilliance of "extra ordinary qualities of leadership" and "exceptionally meritorious service". Fleet Admiral Leahy's son retired as a Rear Admiral and the Fleet Admiral Leahy's grand nephew is presently serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush, thus maintaining a proud Naval tradition. Any and all efforts on your behalf regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated by ALL of the former USS Leahy shipmates. I look forward to your reply. Respectfully, Sign Your Name Print Your Name Print Your Full Address Add your Email Address
